Ahmad Ibn Hanbal And The Baker

One night, having no place to say, Ahmad ibn Hanbal went to a masjid to sleep. Yet the caretaker refused to let him stay the night. Ibn Hanbal insisted on his right. Finally, the caretaker dragged Ibn Hanbal to the door and threw him from the masjid. In the street, he was found by the baker. The baker, not knowing who he was, invited

 

Khaleefah Uthman's Justice

Uthman Ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) had the quality of justice. It was narrated from Ubayd-Allah ibn Adiyy ibn al-Khiyar that he entered upon Uthman when he was being besieged and said to him: You are the leader of the people, and there has befallen you what you see, which is that a man who led us in prayer is the leader of this turmoil - meaning Abd al-Rahman ibn Udays al-Balwa - but I shall refuse to pray behind him. Uthman said to him: Prayer is the best thing that the people can do. If the people do something good then join them in that, and if they do something bad then avoid their bad deeds. (al-Bukhari, no. 695)

 

Tahawi and Mansur

The emir of Egypt, Abu Mansur al-Khazri (d.307/919), paid Imam al-Tahawi a visit. As a way of currying favor with the masses, it was the custom of many rulers to marry their daughters to notable and beloved scholars. So the emir offered his daughter in marriage to Imam al-Tahawi, who graciously declined. The emir then offered him wealth and land. Imam al-Tahawi also turned down those offers. The emir then asked the imam to request whatever he wished for or needed.

He was well-known for his extensive knowledge of halal and haram - what is permissible and what is forbidden - and of the Science of Hadeeth. But he is especially known for holding fast to the sunnah of amr and nahy - enjoining good and forbidding evil.
